American GI Forum of California  Resolution

NOMINATION OF JUDGE SONIA SOTOMAYOR

RESOLUTION

Whereas; The American GI Forum of California, a Hispanic Veterans Organization commends President Barack Obama on his nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to be the next Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court and;

Whereas; The American GI Forum, since it was founded by Dr. Hector P. Garcia in 1948, has been a great defender of civil rights and social justice, also believes that judge Sotomayor demonstrates a commitment to upholding civil rights, equality of opportunity and justice and;

Whereas; Judge Sotomayor is an outstanding jurist who has had a long career as a public servant, and since 1998, has served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the second circuit and;

Whereas; Judge Sotomayor served as District Court Judge for the Southern District of New York a position to which she was appointed by former president George H.W. Bush and was unanimously approved by the U.S. Senate and;

Whereas; The American GI Forum of California believes that Judge Sotomayor is an outstanding nominee with a brilliant wealth of judicial experience and will be an outstanding Supreme Court Justice,

Now therefore; be it resolved that the American GI Forum of California urges the Senate of the United States to confirm the first Latino to the U.S. Supreme Court.
